Bentley has come forward to state that the latest reiteration of the top-of-the-line Bentley, the Mulsanne, will be positioned to compete directly with the Rolls-Royce Phantom. They did also, however, acknowledge that besides the “prestige” factor in which they are lacking at, the other shortfall of the Mulsanne range (or lack of) is that there are not enough models in the line-up to entice potential buyers to switch over from the Rolls-Royce camp.
Currently, Rolls-Royce offers the Phantom is 3 distinct variants. The sedan, the coupe, and the Drophead Phantom which is a 2-door convertible. The only variant of the Mulsanne which Bentley currently offers on sale is the standard Mulsanne sedan, a run-of-the-mill 4-door sedan.
Having shown the concept of the Bentley Mulsanne Convertible at 2012’s Pebble Beach Show, it does goes a long way to show that Bentley themselves are in fact putting much thought into maybe expanding the line-up to compete directly with Rolls-Royce on the ultra-luxury automobile front. While we might not see an expanded line-up in the near future, it is certainly a possibility.
We think that the pressing issue at the moment is how Bentleys are perceived as the “cheaper” equivalent” of the more prestigious “Spirit of Ecstasy” marque that is dominant in the upper echelons of automobile brands.
Would you like to see an expanded model range that is based-off the currently Bentley Mulsanne?
